How you catch Legionnaires’ disease
Legionellosis is not contracted by drinking or using infected water used for cooking, nor is it transmitted from one person to another: it is contracted through the respiratory tract, that is, by breathing in the vapours infected by the bacterium.
This is why infection with Legionnaires’ disease often occurs through exposure to air conditioning or due to the vapours that are created while taking a bath or a shower.
Does your business operate in one of these sectors?
Then you need to protect your systems with an anti-legionella treatment
Legionella guidelines:
to prevent and control legionellosis
Managers of tourist resorts, healthcare centres and in general of accommodation facilities have to contact specialists who will draw up a risk assessment document (DVR).
To draft this document, the Italian Ministry of Health has provided precise guidelines and a protocol featuring 3 sequential and closely related steps.
The 3-step anti-legionella protocol established by the Italian Ministry of Health
Risk assessment
It consists in identifying systems that promote the spread of the bacterium.
Risk management
It consists in implementing actions aimed at eliminating the critical issues found at the assessment stage.
Risk communication
It consists in informing and raising awareness about the issue among those potentially at risk.
In addition to the above risk assessment document, there is an obligation to keep a self-monitoring legionella log to track all maintenance work carried out on water and air conditioning systems.
